Belstone

A rather unique and quiet village perched on the northern fringe of Dartmoor. Wild ponies and sheep that tend to wander on the village green often outnumber locals. The village has a historic atmosphere – don’t be caught misbehaving of you may find yourself in the ancient village stocks that still survive today! There is a medieval Church, Methodist Chapel, Post Office and riding stables.

The local village pub – "The Tors" offers a warm welcome and boasts a selection of good ales and fine food including Belstone’s own cheese. Additionally in the village is a family run cream teahouse, which the owner of Moorlands Cottage rates as the best in the West.

The surrounding area

This is a wonderful walking and riding country among some of the grandest tors of Dartmoor. High Willhays (the highest point in Southern England) can be reached on a morning’s walk. Cranmere Pool is equally accessible. The latter is the prime goal of walkers, a desolate place in the centre of the northern moor where Dartmoor’s oldest letterbox is found where four main rivers have their source. The owner’s family maintains the Taw Marsh box, which is established in 1885 – the most secretive box on the moor.

Many places of great interest and beauty in the Dartmoor National Park are only a short drive away. Lydford Gorge (National Trust), Fingle Bridge, Meldon Reservoir, Castle Drogo and Haytor Rocks to name but a few. Additionally there are many prehistoric remains on the moor - stone circles, cairns and standing stones. Okehampton, the central country town of Devon is just 4 miles away with Norman Castle, swimming pool, tennis courts, museum. Tourist Information Office etc.

Belstone is situated right in the heart of Devon. The north and south coastal resorts such as Bideford, Torbay and Exmouth are in easy reach.

Three golf courses are additionally in easy local reach – Okehampton, Ashbury Manor and the Championship course at Moretonhampstead. Also, scattered in villages and towns are a host of fine character pubs and restaurants to meet all tastes and requirements.
